children as teachers

mom and the monkeys the three boys margi and ayle nose to nose daddy and ayla Children. Our babies. Our greatest teachers. Also known around here as the “Monkeys”, they have been teaching me since coming into the world. We share the most sacred of connections, and love deeper than anything I have ever known. We marvel at how different our children are even in the very beginning during babyhood. We all are sourced in the Divine flow of life and yet there is such magic in the individual experience.

You can see it in their eyes, that innocent clarity and open heart, pure truth and real freedom. It is the way they look at us with those piercing eyes and some inexplicable capacity for understanding what matters most. Unburdened by the ego, children fearlessly explore and creatively express themselves with honesty and humor. It is amazing to see what they create with speech, song, movement and art. In many ways this is what yoga brings us back to – a space of great potential for original creativity.

Our children hold space for us in ways no one else can. They remind us to practice without fail during every waking hour. Our children have the very special gift of being able to simultaneously press all of our buttons at the same time. They ask us to transcend our personal junk and evolve. How wonderful this mutual teaching is – how fantastic its challenges and rewards!

Life is wonderfully mysterious, and in the end unspeakable, unbound by words. Infinite. Every moment is precious. Every breath a gift. Even the most mundane and insignificant moments are special and should be tended to with utmost love and mindfulness. Our children remind us of this every day.

A child said What is the grass? fetching it to me with full hands; How could I answer the child? I do not know what it is any more than he. —Walt Whitman
